Ever since a well-travelled jetsetter I know raved about this baby design hotel on the capital’s famed Oriental Parade I’ve been desperate to stay there, and I recently got the chance.

With the borders closed, it’s a treat to feel like you’re in a different country, and Ohtel definitely rocks a boutique European – or is it New York? – vibe.

Check in to one of the 10 rooms stacked over four storeys via the lobby desk at Duppa Bar, named after a 19th century settler who was, for a time, Oriental Bay’s sole resident.

And though the city’s brimming with places to go and things to do, you might just find yourself wanting to stay put in your spacious room, complete with mid-century furniture and contemporary art and ceramics.
As for the view, there’s nothing international about that – it’s absolutely, positively Wellington.
